The concerto is approximately 36 minutes long and unfolds in three connected movements. It features an expressive, virtuosic solo cello part that moves fluidly between moments of introspection, bursts of rhythmic energy, and richly textured orchestration. Salonen uses the full palette of the orchestra, incorporating electronic elements and extended techniques to give the piece a contemporary, cinematic feel. The work has been praised for its emotional depth, structural innovation, and for pushing the technical boundaries of the cello. It’s a significant contribution to the 21st-century cello repertoire and a strong example of Salonen’s modern yet accessible compositional voice.01. San Francisco Symphony - Cello Concerto I02.
